The League of Friends to The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital are proud to be taking part in The Great Big Green Week – the UK’s biggest celebration of community action to tackle climate change and protect nature.

Every June, thousands of events take place in towns, cities and villages across the country – with more than 1 million people taking part last year. This year the hospital Friends are actively using their community ties to join in and make a difference.

The event which runs from June 8 – 12 will see the League of Friends launch their Plant a Promise scheme, along with a Seed Exchange.

Plant a Promise is a fun and easy way to make a difference around RJAH. All participants need is a spare windowsill or a sunny corner at home.

Those wanting to take part are invited to collect free seeds and plant pots from the Helpdesk in the main entrance of RJAH, once the young plants have grown, they can be brought back to the hospital to be planted around the 72-acre site to be enjoyed by patients, staff and visitors.

The Seed Exchange will run alongside – simply bring in a packet of seeds and swap it for another to take home. Suttons, Dobbies, Thompson and Morgan, and Colour Supplies have kindly donated seed packets to kick-start the initiative.

Mike Fish, Garden Manager, said: “We are really pleased to be taking part in The Great Big Green Week and to be launching initiatives that give people a simple but meaningful way to get involved.

“Plant a Promise and the Seed Exchange are all about bringing our community together, encouraging people to take small actions that can make a big difference, and helping us create an even greener environment for everyone at RJAH. We hope lots of people will join us and support the scheme.”

This initiative aligns with RJAH’s Green Plan – a sustainability strategy for reducing its environmental impact while continuing to deliver high-quality patient care.

RJAH’s approach is that reducing emissions, improving efficiency and adapting to climate change will help protect patient health, reduce costs and ensure the hospital can continue providing specialist orthopaedic care for future generations.

If you’re interested in supporting the hospital further, the Friends are currently recruiting gardening volunteers. For more information, or to register your interest please visit: https://friendsrjah.org.uk/volunteer/
